Tori Many disciplines use educational cases to teach students important practice-based skills, which often include descriptions of fictional patients/clients and may inadvertently introduce bias in the curriculum and marginalize diverse students. In this session, learn to examine the hidden messages of cases in your curriculum and to deploy a systematic, student-engaged process that can encourage faculty buy-in and addresses unconscious bias.
Easing the transition: Teaching freshmen students metacognitive study strategies - Zoom Room 2 Kathy Berlin, Heaven Hollender We present results from a Learning Strategy Project that freshmen students (n=71) completed during First Year Seminar. Students were taught metacognitive study strategies to improve outcomes in all courses. Results indicate the project was highly successful and students found the strategies helpful in transitioning to college. Our goal: to introduce, motivate, and inspire instructors on the use of metacognitive strategies.
Research communication and the process of developing a policy brief - Zoom Room 3 Joseph Bartholomew, Keith Matthew Miller With the goal of developing policy briefs to enhance social work students' education, two social work doctoral students created the Social Policy and Research Communication Program (SPRCP). The SPRCP entails identifying a research interest, applying research translation best practices, and producing a policy brief. This session will highlight components of the SPRCP and the policy brief development process.

11:50 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. | Implementing a UDL approach for inclusivity in technical communication courses - Zoom Room 4 Julie Stella, Corinne Renguette Presenters will discuss the implementation of a Universal Design for Learning approach to revising courses in technical communication including creating an implementation matrix, using the IUPUI Canvas online course template, beginning the process of applying the TILT framework to assignments, and adding multiple means of engagement, representation, and action & expression to courses.
Peer-evaluation in team-based learning: Investigating peer-assessment as an assessment - Zoom Room 5 Kyle Robertson, Jessica Byram Many medical school and health care professional curricula are incorporating teaching methods along with learning and assessment approaches, which aim to foster communication, professionalism, along with teamwork and leadership. To accomplish this Team-based learning (TBL) is a commonly used pedagogical approach. This study examines the peer-evaluation instrument as a means of summative assessment by utilizing correlation and principal components analysis.

Yet, students are not always inclined to work well with each other. Moreover, amidst “Black Lives Matters” and social justice movements, students may experience culturally based conflict while completing group assignments. This presentation will share effective cultural competence activities to help students familiarize themselves with one another and resolve conflicts.

In this interactive session utilizing presentation, modules, breakout rooms, and discussion, attendees will learn how to approach design and delivery of similar materials on their own campuses, with special attention paid to first-year seminar courses.

Stuart Schrader, Odette Aguire, Olga Malukova, Maya Aldesheva, Drashty Mody Cross-Cultural Humility Brings True Positivity: During the height of the pandemic, as part of the IU School of dentistry (IUSD) course (Relationship-centered Care II), we designed and conducted a series of 2 cross-cultural educational zoom sessions between students and colleagues of IUSD, Kazakhstan National Medical University's Dental School and Director of Burmese American Institute (in Indianapolis). We discussed diversity, social determinants of health and disparities, and interactions between mental, general, and oral health.
